Most guys wouldn’t welcome an uninvited guest, especially when they are teeing off in a tournament. However, the outcome is much different when the crasher is the senior travel editor for Golf Digest and the tournament is an annual getaway for a group of life-long friends.

In March, the Alabama Gulf Coast welcomed the 40th Annual Bratton Brothers Invitational to the area’s championship courses. Begun when Nixon was president and green fees were $5.00, this annual tradition started after Joe and Bobby Bratton invited five of their Birmingham friends to a guys weekend in Gulf Shores.

Through the years, these individuals remained true to their commitment of one golf weekend per year to reconnect with their friends.

Greg Waldrop, a member of the original group, submitted the tournament’s itinerary to Golf Digest to be featured in one of the magazine’s standing columns. As an editor for the publication, Matt Ginella caught up with the group in March at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.

“It is just wonderful to be a part of something that has lasted for 40 years, which is a tribute to the leadership of our chairman Hugh Johnson,” Waldrop said. “We are looking to our next milestone anniversary of 50 years.”
